Birding in Goa

Over 100 bird species recorded in Birdsong Retreat (Jan 2017 to December 2018)

Goa, a tiny state tucked into the West coast of India is a birding paradise. It encompasses a large variety of habitats. There’s the majestic forest-clad slopes of the Western Ghats with tiny villages nestled among the trees and vast tracts sanctified as reserve forest. There’s water everywhere – rivers, streams, backwaters, man-made and natural ponds and of course the Arabian Sea with its estuaries, mangroves, beaches, sandbars and mudflats. Wide lateritic plains covered with scrub soar above emerald green rice fields that hug the land. A multitude of eco-systems for birds to call home, permanently or for just a part of the year.

It is not surprising then, that this multi-faceted jewel that is Goa plays host to almost 500 species of birds.

Birdsong Retreat lies on the slopes of the Succor Plateau, rough laterite rock covered with scrub forest and grass. It is home to several endemic as well as migrant birds and a favourite haunt of birdwatchers in Goa. And the verdant green cover surrounding Birdsong Retreat attracts many of them.

Rajyashree Dutt, one of the hosts, is a keen birder. The list below identifies the 101 species she has seen onsite until December 2018.
